Daily 5-Minute Games for Kids
Five-minute games are great ways to use up small pockets of time between classes and lessons or when the kids just need an energy booster. Although these games are short in duration, they provide players exposure to different learning styles through music, physical coordination and storytelling. Playing them helps create a stimulating classroom or home environment that nurtures young minds.

Crazy Walk

This game helps children follow directions by using their bodies. Direct the children to walk slowly around a room, using music to set the pace. Call out a movement such as backward, forward, sideways, like a kangaroo, like a cat, giant steps, tiny steps or any other style of moving that comes to mind; the children must respond to the directive as quickly as possible. To vary the game, experiment with music in different tempos, let a child call out the directions or move the players from room to room.
Don't Spill the Water

Tape a finish line to the floor or sidewalk and give your child or students a cup that is nearly full of water. The challenge is to walk to the line while spilling as little water as possible. To increase the challenge, hold a cup of water in each hand. For older children, have them walk around an obstacle such as a chair or another child with the cup of water.
Ring Around the Rosie

Have the children stand in a circle holding hands. In small groups, let them walk in circle formation as they loudly sing, "Ring around the rosie / A pocketful of posies / Ashes, ashes...we all fall down." As the students fall to the floor, clap your hands and chant the following verse to get everybody to stand up again, "The cows are in the meadow / Eating buttercups / A-tishoo, a-tishoo / We all stand up."
Story Ball

Inform students that they must come up with a story within five minutes. Start the story off by telling them the first sentence. When you have finished your sentence, toss a ball to a student. That student must quickly say the next sentence and then toss the ball to another classmate. Continue creating sentences and tossing the ball until five minutes is up.
