Glitz with Glitter
-
Add glitz and glamour to any pottery vase with any type of acrylic paint. Paint the entire vase with plain, metallic or opal essence acrylic paint. Blow glitter onto the wet paint. After the paint is dry, spray three to five coats of semi-gloss or high-gloss spray sealer. The sealer holds the glitter in place so it will not flake off when touched. If you have a pottery vase that has already been glazed, and then spray or paint a layer of primer over the glaze. Allow the glaze to dry then follow the same instructions for adding paint and glitter.
Mirror Tiles or Decorative Stone
-
Cover the exterior of the pottery vase with 1/4- to 1/2-inch mirror tiles or decorative stones. Glue the items to the surface with epoxy glue made for ceramics. Place the vase on its side. Put the glue on the back of the mirror tile or decorative stone. Place the tile or stone on the vase in the desired location. Complete one row from the top to the bottom of the vase, and then work on each side of the row. Allow this area to dry for 15 minutes. Turn the vase a quarter turn and repeat the process until the entire surface is covered.
Soft Surface
-
Create a soft surface pottery vase with the addition of supple, easy to manipulate fabric such as batiste, chiffon, crepe, linen, gauze, mesh and fishnet. Measure the widest circumference of the vase. Cut strips of fabric 1-inch wide and the length of the circumference. Spray the entire vase with spray adhesive. Allow the adhesive to rest five minutes. Wrap the strips around the vase starting at the place where you measured the circumference. Press into place. Repeat the process until the vase is finished. Cut off unused portions of the strips at the end of each row. Allow the vase to sit for two hours. Spray the surface with three to five coats of matte acrylic spray sealer. The sealer helps to protect the cloth and makes the vase easier to clean with a damp cloth.
Greenware Decorations
-
Two ways of adding adornment to a piece of leather-hard greenware exist. The first is incising which is carving into the surface of the pot. The second is adding small sculptures to the surface such as flowers made with five very small balls of clay or flat petals. Each additive piece should be no more than 3/8-inch thick. Glue the small sculptures to the leather-hard greenware with slip. Slip is a glue specifically for holding pieces of raw clay together. Make slip with clay and water. Mix enough water with a 1- to 2-inch ball of clay to create the consistency of pudding. Paint the area for attachment with the slip. Place the small sculpture on the slip and push lightly. Allow to dry completely and fire in the kiln. Finish the project with glaze or any of the above-mentioned applications.
