Crafts From Natural Items
-
Natural items make great raw materials for horse related crafts. Use two pine cones, four sticks and a few pine needles to create a miniature horse. A larger pine cone forms the horse's body while a smaller pine cone becomes the head when it is glued to the end of the larger cone. Add sticks for legs and pine needles for the mane and tail. Your miniature horse is complete.
Another idea is to use six Popsicle sticks to construct a picture frame that looks like a stable door. Using white craft glue, build a basic foundation for the frame by adhering four sticks in the form of a square. Add two sticks at the bottom of the photo frame adjacent to the lowest stick to give the frame the appearance of a stable door. For a picture holder with an equine theme, cut the profile of a horse's head out of corrugated cardboard, folding the lower 2 inches under. Attach a row of paper clips along the head and neck of the horse in the location of the mane. The paper clips should stand upright and extend past the edge of the horse's head. When the glue is dry, clip photographs into the paper clips. You could also make a sculpted horse from homemade clay. The website The Holiday Cone offers several recipes for homemade modeling clay.
Paper Craft
-
You can create a very simple stick horse by stuffing a brown paper lunch sack with newspaper and attaching it to a 2-inch by 36-inch dowel rod. Attach the bag by pulling the end of the bag over the end of the rod and securing with rubber bands. Draw a horse's face on the bag and glue on yarn for the mane. An empty oatmeal box makes a great body for a paper and cardboard hobby horse. Cover the oatmeal box with construction paper in the color that you want your horse. Use four Popsicle sticks for the legs. Cut two rockers from cardboard and attach two legs to each rocker. Add a card stock horse's head and trim with black yarn for the mane and tail and brown yarn for the bridle and lead. Finish off details with a felt tipped marker.
Fabric Crafts
-
Use an old sock to create a cute horse puppet. Just add craft eyes, red felt for the mouth and yarn for the mane. Those who enjoy needlework can find inexpensive patterns to crochet a stuffed horse at websites, such as Paradise Fibers. For a fabric stuffed horse, look for a simple drawing of a horse silhouette in a children's coloring book to use as a pattern. Cut the fabric in the shape of the pattern and stitch around the edges. Make sure to turn the right sides of the fabric together and leave an opening of around 3 inches. Turn the fabric to reveal the right sides and stuff the horse with polyester fiberfill through the 3-inch opening. Stitch the opening closed and add whatever trims you desire to complete the horse.
