How to Care for an Infant or Toddler Foster Child

Caring for infant and toddler foster children is both more difficult and easier than caring for older children. Generally, babies and toddlers are more upset at the beginning of foster care when they still remember their parents. Eventually, they forget their parents and you become their parent. The hard part is realizing that, sooner or later, you will have to adopt them, or they will have to leave.

      Care for their needs promptly. This shows them that they can trust you. If you do not do this, you could be harming them.

      Ensure that their daycare centers, babysitters and anyone else who care for the children understand their needs and follows your guidelines.

      Remember to keep a baby book for them. Now is the best time to ask for, and record, information about the birth family and the history of the child. They will want this information, and you may be their only option of getting it. Since you may not be around or you may not remember, write it in their baby books. You may even wish to write them a letter or two to put in their baby book.
