How to Become a Foster Grandparent. Foster grandparents work with children of all ages in various programs across the United States. They provide mentoring, support and tutoring. Seniors age 60 and above qualify for the program and volunteer for a minimum of 15 hours a week. They may work in after school programs, day care centers, hospitals and schools. Visit the Senior Corps website. They have information listed by state on what programs use foster grandparents. The contact information for each individual program is available on the website. Some programs which use foster grandparents are, Head Start, YWCA, Catholic Charities and Volunteers of America. Contact the program in your state that uses foster grandparents. They will inform you of the specific opportunities and any additional application procedures. Fill out an application. This will include income information. Those seniors who are income eligible will receive a small stipend for being a foster grandparent. This does not interfere with social security or other benefits. Go for an interview. A volunteer coordinator or program director will ask you questions about yourself. They may ask about past experience working with children and why you want to be a foster grandparent. A background check will likely be done to check for any criminal history. Receive a free physical. Every year foster grandparents get a physical. When starting with the program a TB test will usually be performed. Attend an orientation. Many programs that use foster grandparents will have an orientation for volunteers before they start working with the children. Orientation programs will vary depending on assignment. Start working with the children. Once you accept the assignment and have attended any training the program may have you will start helping the children. Remember you are there to provide mentoring, friendship and help with educational goals.
