House Requirements of a Foster Parent
According to the National Foster Parent Association, although foster parents are not required to own their own houses, each state has specific safety and space requirements for foster homes. Although these regulations vary from state to state, several basic housing requirements of a foster parent are applicable throughout the United States.
-
Bedroom Space
-
Foster parents are required to provide a minimum amount of bedroom and storage space for each foster child. For example, a foster parent may need to provide at least 50 square feet of bedroom space and one dresser for each child.
Fire Safety
-
A foster home must be fitted with working fire safety devices, such as fire alarms and extinguishers. Bedrooms must also include proper exit options in the case of a fire.
Medication Storage
-
All medications in the foster home must be stored out of reach of foster children. For homes with older children, a safe or lockbox is recommended to ensure that kids have no access to potentially harmful medications.
Baby Safety
-
Foster homes with babies or toddlers must include certain safety features, such as sturdy gates to block staircases and radiator covers to prevent burns.
Water Temperature
-
The water coming into a foster home must be below a certain temperature to prevent burns to the children in care.
