Important Things to Bring During Labor
Good preparation is half the battle. If you are in the latter stages of pregnancy, the birthing center or hospital may provide a list of items that you need to pack for your big day. Having your bag packed and ready to go by the end of the 36th week is essential because you can go into labor at any time from then on. You'll need items for yourself, your new baby, your partner and for the hospital.

For the Hospital
-
Upon check-in, the hospital needs your photo identification and insurance information for its administration. Make sure you have your birth plan prepared and printed out. A birth plan is written documentation stating your wishes before, during and after the labor. It covers everything from your desired birthing position and labor pain medication to delivery and baby feeding methods. Standard birth plans can be found online, and the hospital may also provide you with a birth plan worksheet.
For Yourself
-
Bring a comfortable robe, slippers, socks and at least two nightgowns for yourself. If you intend to breastfeed, a nightgown that opens in the front is ideal. Bring short-sleeved nightgowns because it will make the frequent blood pressure checks easier. You can also choose to use the ones provided by the hospital. Pack a nursing bra, if you plant to breastfeed, and clothes to go home in after the birth. Opt for clothes that fit loosely at the waist and flat, comfortable shoes. Bring several pairs of underwear and high-absorbency sanitary napkins, if you don't want to use the ones the hospital provides.
For the Baby
-
You cannot bring your baby home without an infant car seat. Install the seat in your car ahead of time and know how to use it. Provide onesies for your newborn to wear under his clothes and weather-appropriate outerwear. A hat and socks will help keep your baby warm. Bring receiving blankets to wrap and swaddle your baby. Many hospitals provide everything for the baby, but you may want to use your own baby clothes and blankets for the many photo opportunities that present themselves. Most parents like to pack a special going-home outfit for the baby.
For Your Partner
-
Your labor coach or partner is essential in the birthing process, and therefore you want to take good care of him. Bring snacks and reading material for entertainment during waiting periods. A change of clothing and shoes for your partner and a camera with plenty of film to document the entire process will come in handy. Because labor can be an extensive process and your partner may be staying overnight with you, some toiletries for him will be appreciated.
