How to Host Adoption Baby Showers

Baby showers are very common when a woman is pregnant, but baby showers are for adoptive mothers and fathers too. While planning your baby shower, you may want to plan it for after the baby has been adopted so that she can also be present. Adoption showers do not need to conform to the traditional baby shower design. It's all about celebrating your adoption the way you want to. Include the adoptive father and other male family members or friends as well. Everyone should be able to celebrate together as you enter parenthood.

Instructions

Send out invitations to your family and friends. This can serve not only as an invitation, but an announcement. Include your child's name if it has been chosen, so that your guests can bring personalized gifts if they want to.

The invitations don't need to be the usual baby shower invites, they could even be "Welcome home" invitations. If you have a picture of the child you are adopting, consider having photo invitations made up.

Purchase your decorations. Try to stay away from feminine themes with only pastel colors if you are inviting males to the shower. Consider both "welcome" banners for the child and "congratulations" banners for the parents. You can also hold a stork theme baby shower, to show that babies don't always arrive in the usual way.

Decide how to organize your food. You can either cook the meal yourself, do a pot luck, or have the meal catered. Pot luck is the easiest way to go. Ask your guests to each bring a dish to share with everyone. Make sure you don't have four types of pasta salad and no dessert. Ask a few people to make main dishes, a few others to make side dishes, and the rest to make desserts.

Plan games that don't have anything to do with pregnancy. Collect a group of baby dolls, and have a timed race to see who can diaper and dress the baby the fastest. Give each person a clothespin when they come in the door, and explain that if anyone says the word "baby", the person who catches them can take his clothespin. Have the clothespins be raffle tickets for a door prize.

If you already know the child's name, hand out paper, and ask guests to make as many words as possible in five minutes using only the letters in the child's name.

As guests arrive, give them envelopes that fit your thank you cards. Ask them to fill out their addresses so that you can easily send thank you cards right after the party.
