How to Adopt a Child From China

While adopting a child from China can be a wonderful way to build your family, it takes a lot of time and a good amount of patience. You will have to fill out layers of paperwork and then you will need to wait before you see the face of the child referred to your family. If you are ready and willing to partake in the process, the following steps should help guide you.

Instructions

    • 1

Review recent information about adoption from China at the U.S. Department of State website. It is important to do this as the China Center for Adoption Affairs (CCAA) occasionally changes adoption requirements.

    • 2

Determine if you are eligible to adopt a child from China. The CCAA is responsible for determining who is eligible to adopt a child from China. Some of the requirements include a net worth of $80,000 and generally no more than 4 children living in the household.

    • 3

Research and select an agency. Work with your agency to gather the paperwork required for your dossier. The dossier includes the following materials: petition to adopt, birth certificates, marriage certificates, certificates of employment, certificate of financial status, medical examination reports, local police clearance, home study, immigration for 171-H and numerous photographs.

    • 4

Submit your completed dossier to your agency and they will forward it to the CCAA. Then you need to wait for your referral. You may want to use this time to learn more about Chinese culture and to prepare for parenting a child.

    • 5

Receive your referral from the CCAA. Generally when you receive the referral you will have a picture of the child, medical information and a growth report. You then must accept or decline your referral.

    • 6

Wait for approximately 6 to 8 weeks before you travel to your child's province in China. Once in your child's province, you will meet your child and you will finalize the adoption of your child.

    • 7

Travel from your child's province to the city of Guangzhou. This is where you will obtain your child's Visa to come into the United States. Generally, families stay in Guangzhou for 3 to 5 days.

    • 8

Return home with your child. If you traveled without your spouse, then you will need to re-adopt your child in the United States. If you traveled with your spouse, you may still want to re-adopt in order to obtain a birth certificate from your state.
