Items to Keep in a Diaper Bag
A properly packed diaper bag ensures you have everything you need for baby with you at all times. Keep a bag packed and near the door so you are also ready for a last-minute trip. As long as you have the most important items in the bag, you can rest assured you are ready to care for your bundle of joy when on the road or out and about in town.

Changing Supplies
-
Bring more diapers than you think you will need. For example, most babies require no more than one change during a four-hour outing, but bring two or three diapers instead of one just in case. Include baby wipes, hand sanitizer and diaper rash cream with the changing supplies. Bring a leak-proof bag, especially if you use cloth diapers. Include extra diaper covers and fasteners with your cloth diapering supplies.
Change of Clothes
-
Keep a change of clothing in the diaper bag in case your baby soils her clothing. During the spring or other seasons when the weather is prone to quick changes, include items you can layer on, such as a jacket. Include an extra shirt for yourself, in case yours becomes soiled from spit-up or another accident.
Food and Water
-
Store extra formula, bottled water and bottles in the bag. For an older baby, include a sippy cup and water or juice. If your baby is beginning to eat solid foods, store one or two jars of baby food and a spoon in the bag. Keep cereal and other snacks on hand in sealed baggies for older babies. Add a bib or two to help prevent messes when eating on the go.
Blankets
-
Blankets are a versatile item, so keep at least one in the diaper bag. Use them to swaddle your baby if the weather gets cooler, as a sun shade draped over a stroller or carrier, as a nursing cover or as an impromptu changing pad. A blanket also provides a clean surface for your baby to lie on or play on at parks and other locations.
Health Items
-
Include a small first-aid kit. Add infant pain reliever and any other medications your baby needs in the kit. Bring sunblock or a hat for the baby, even if you plan to be inside, in case your plans change. Babies can get a sunburn even on cloudy days.
Play Items
-
Bring plenty of toys for older babies, such as board books, coloring supplies and other small toys. Include teething rings, rattles and pacifiers for younger babies and infants. Add a book, magazine or a puzzle book and pencil for yourself, as well.
