How to Store Baby Formula When Leaving the House

The first few days at home with your baby are a time of learning and bonding. But as nice as it sounds, you can't stay home with your baby forever. At some point, you'll have to leave the house. If your baby is formula-fed, formula will be at the top of the list of things to pack -- and proper storage is essential for your baby's health.

Things You'll Need

  • Bottles and nipples
  • Prepared, ready-to-use or powdered formula
  • Bottled water (if necessary)
  • Can opener (if necessary)
  • Plastic bag with seal

Instructions

  1. Prepared Formula

    • 1

Prepare the formula at home, using sterilized bottles and nipples and following the directions on the package. You can prepare formula up to 24 hours in advance as long as you store it in the refrigerator -- this prevents bacteria growth.

    • 2

Pour the liquid formula into a container with a tight lid, or into a bottle. Place the container or bottle in an insulated cooler with an ice pack.

    • 3

Remove the formula from the cooler shortly before your baby is ready to eat. Run it under warm tap water to warm it up before giving it to your baby, unless she is willing to drink cold formula.

    Powdered Formula or Ready-to-Use Formula

    • 4

Store the can of powder or ready-to-use liquid formula in your diaper bag or other bag. Include a can opener, if necessary.

    • 5

Add bottles and nipples to the bag. Place them together in a sealed plastic bag to keep them sanitary. Bring a couple of extras just in case you drop the bottle or it breaks.

    • 6

Pack bottled water if you are going to prepare powdered formula away from the home. After you prepare the formula or pour the ready-to-use formula into the bottle, run the bottle under warm tap water to heat it up, unless your baby is willing to accept formula that's at room temperature.
