How to Massage Teething Baby Gums
Excessive drooling; increased crankiness; and swollen, red gums usually signal that a tooth is about to appear in your baby's little mouth, according to Marisa Cohen, writer and mother of two, in "American Baby" magazine, reprinted on Parents.com. Teething symptoms often get worse at night and can cause your little one to be unable to sleep, which can be hard on the entire family. Several techniques can be used to massage her gums and put her at ease.
Things You'll Need
- Washrag
- Clean hands
Instructions
Clean your hands. Wash them thoroughly with soap and hot water so you will be germ-free when you put your fingers in her mouth. Locate the spot. Typically it will be red and swollen. If not, your baby will guide you as she attempts to bite down hard right where the sensitive gum area is located. Once you find the spot, begin the massage. Press down. Using your clean finger, press down gently on her gums and rub back and forth across the affected area for two minutes at a time. Repeat this as often as needed. Use a clean, cold rag. A washcloth that has been soaked in water, rung out and placed in the refrigerator to get cold, works well according to the South Dakota Department of Health. Place your finger on the rag, and press down on the gum with a side-to-side massaging motion. The pressure of your finger combined with the rough cloth will help break down the gum and let the tooth come through. Previous:What Causes Excess Drool in Babies?
