How to Babysit an Infant

Taking care of another person̵7;s child is a big responsibility, but it can be a great help to the new parents who might need a break. Compared to caring for older children, babysitting an infant brings its own challenges. Infants require constant care and attention, frequent feedings and lots of diaper changes. Being well-prepared and practicing with family members̵7; babies can help a babysitter take care of an infant with confidence.

Instructions

    • 1

Receive proper training prior to accepting a babysitting job. Take the American Red Cross babysitter class, CPR and a first aid course. Your local community center, hospital or library might offer these type of classes. Learn how to change a diaper, prepare a bottle of formula or breast milk and how to properly feed an infant.

    • 2

Arrive a few minutes early for your babysitting job and ask the baby̵7;s parents for safety and care instructions before being alone with the infant. Write down the parents̵7; names, cell phone numbers and where they will be while they are out. Request the child̵7;s birth date, height and weight, along with the pediatrician̵7;s information, in case of emergency. Ask when the baby needs to eat and when she should go to sleep.

    • 3

Follow the feeding schedule that the baby̵7;s parents give you. Give only the formula, breast milk, food, medicine or drink that the parents instruct you to. Confirm whether the baby has any known allergies.

    • 4

Ask yourself, ̶0;Is the baby hungry, wet or tired?̶1; when she cries. Feed the baby, change her diaper and then place her on her on her back to sleep in her crib or bassinet. Resist placing stuffed animals, pillows or fluffy blankets in the crib with the baby to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. Offer a pacifier, if the baby normally uses one, at bedtime.

    • 5

Be safe and alert at all times when babysitting an infant. Stay with the baby if you are bathing her, know what to do in case of a fire and avoid talking to your friends on the phone while you're working. Call the baby̵7;s parents if you have a question, or 911 in case of an emergency.
