How to Know Whether Twins Are Identical or Fraternal
If you have just had twins, you may be wondering if they are identical or fraternal. Identical twins are genetically identical, occurring when an already fertilized egg spits into two babies. Fraternal twins are no more genetically alike than any sibling, occurring when unique sperm fertilize two different eggs. Although it can be difficult to determine what kind of twins you have, there are a number of physical features and tests that you can conduct to make a determination.
Things You'll Need
- Ultrasound results during pregnancy
- DNA test kits
Instructions
Compare the twin's eye colors. If they have different eye colors, they are fraternal twins. If they have the same eye color, they may be either identical or fraternal. Compare the twin's genders. If the twins are not the same gender, they are fraternal twins. If they have the same gender, they may be either identical or fraternal. Look for similar physical characteristics. The more similar that the twins look, the greater the likelihood that they are identical. However, since many related babies look similar at birth, this is not a reliable indicator and should not be used to make a final determination. Compare the twin's blood types. If the twins do not have the same blood type, they are fraternal. If they share the same blood type, they may be either identical or fraternal. Have a genetic test done to make a final determination about whether or not they are identical twins. This involves taking a painless swab from the mouth of each twin. A genetic test is a good option when the twins have the same eye color, gender and blood type but information on the placenta is unavailable.
