Photo Ideas for Newborn Twins
Safety is the most important aspect of photographing newborn twins. They should always be within arms reach of their parents or another responsible adult. Be creative when thinking of photo ideas for newborn twins, as they spend most of their time sleeping and lack muscle control, therefore props should be used sparingly. According to professional photographer Ana Villalpando of Ana's Studios, "Bobby's work great, because they mold to the babies and help keep the sleeping twins in position."

Positioning
-
One of the safest ways to photograph newborn twins is to lay them on the floor. The photographer can shoot from above looking down, or lay on their belly while taking shots. Shoot several pictures of the babies in various positions, laying on their backs, stomachs and sides, as well as side-to-side or head-to-toe. Lay babies on their sides looking at each other and arrange their arms so that they are hugging each other. Take pictures that compare various body parts, such as the backs of their heads, feet, hands and legs. Get some close-ups of their little faces. Newborns can also be stacked on top of each other: Lay one baby down on their tummy with his face turned towards the camera, then stack the twin by placing him with his arms propped on his sibling's back, looking straight forward. Pictures of each baby by himself should also be taken.
Using Props
-
The safest props for newborn twins are their parents, the floor, boppys, baskets or their bassinet. Blankets are often used to add color and drama to the photo. Swaddle the twins in a blanket with the top snuggled close to their heads and bring it down between their hearts so that the blanket forms a heart shape. Pad laundry or wicker baskets with soft fuzzy blankets and snuggle the twins next to each other facing up toward the camera, or place each twin in her own basket, with a different color blanket. Try adding angel or fairy wings to the babies, surrounding them with flower petals or their father's ties. Babies can be placed in a red wagon, antique bassinets or in a large basin bowl. A creative idea is to lay the children on their sides, facing opposite directions, and place a few books between them, making them into little bookends. Other props include adding holiday themes such as fall leaves and small pumpkins. For a Christmas photo, lay the twins on the floor, and put a personalized stocking on them up to their arms.
With Mom and Dad
-
During the photo shoot, take some family pictures. Mom and Dad can each hold a twin and look lovingly down at the baby. Have parents wear black turtlenecks for a dramatic background while they cradle the twins in their arms. Photo ideas include comparing the parents' hands to the size of the newborns, or having the mother hold both of the twins over her shoulders and snapping photos from behind her. Lay the twins on Dad's shoulders as he does a muscle pose, holding the twins with his hands. Or have mom sit down with a baby laying on her lap while holding the other in her arms.
