How to Make a Baby Sleepy

For new parents, sleepless and restless nights are the name of the game. Getting a baby relaxed enough to fall asleep can sometime seem like a hopeless endeavor, and nothing is more frustrating than a cranky and unhappy baby the next day. For tired parents, several tips can help make your baby sleepy.

Swaddle your baby. Wrap your baby up tightly and snugly in blankets and cloths. This can help your baby feel secure, which in turn helps him to fall asleep more quickly. For optimal results, wrap him up in a lightweight cotton flannel material.

Massage your baby. Massaging is a relaxing and soothing technique that helps get babies ready for sleep, and also encourages drowsiness. Give your baby a pacifier. Pacifiers are an easy way to relax a baby and wind him down after a long day.

Make the room cooler. Temperature regulation also can help make a baby sleepy. People sleep better when the room is slightly cooler, and babies are no exception. For good results, set your baby's room to between 65 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you do not have access to your own thermostat, use a fan or keep the window open just a tad to allow some cool air to come in.

Carry around your baby. Use a sling to carry your baby around which will encourage a natural transition from the waking hours to sleeping. Apart from encouraging the transition, this will also soothe and relax your baby.
