How to Use a Bulb Syringe on Infants
A rubber bulb syringe is the best way to clear a baby's nose or mouth. Since babies are not capable of clearing their own noses or mouths, it is important for caregivers to do this. Mucus can build up in the nose making it difficult for a baby to breathe, sleep or eat. Likewise, mucus or excess milk can accumulate in the mouth, which can also cause difficulty breathing, sleeping and eating, or cause the baby to choke.
Things You'll Need
- Rubber bulb syringe
- Saline drops
- Washcloth or tissue
Instructions
Clear Baby's Nose
Lay the baby on her back on your lap or a flat surface. Baby's head should be slighty tilted back. Hold the baby's head gently, and put one to two drops of saline solution in both nostrils. Hold the baby's head still for 10 seconds. Squeeze the bulb end of the syringe until the sides are caved in completely. Carefully put the rubber tip into one nostril. Place your finger gently over the opposite nostril, and slowly release pressure on the bulb. Remove the rubber tip from the baby's nostril and squeeze the bulb forcefully to remove the mucus into a washcloth or tissue. Wipe the tip of the syringe, and repeat the process in the other nostril. Reapply drops and resuction if baby is still congested after 10 minutes. Wash the rubber bulb syringe in warm soapy water after use. Clear Baby's Throat
Lay the baby on his side, on your lap, in your arm or on a flat surface. Squeeze the bulb end of the syringe until the sides are caved in completely. Gently insert the rubber tip into the baby's mouth. Position the tip in toward the cheek, in between the gums. Slowly release pressure on the bulb. Remove the rubber tip from the baby's mouth. Forcefully squeeze the bulb into a washcloth or tissue to remove any mucus or excess milk. Repeat process if necessary.
