How to Select a Playpen

Playpens are no longer just for playing. They can be used for sleeping, changing diapers and keeping a baby contained in a safe place. Playpens are also portable, so they can easily be taken along with you and set up in a matter of minutes. Knowing what to look for when you are buying a playpen will help you get the most bang for your buck.

Instructions

Practice folding and unfolding the floor model. If you plan to take your playpen with you often, it is important that it be easy to set up and collapse.

    • 2

Consider a playpen with a changing station, which will make it easier for you to diaper your baby on the go. You can also use the changing station when you are at home so you don't have to take your baby to her nursery every time she needs a change. Consumer Reports advises against a playpen with a changing station that flips outside of the pen.

Measure the floor padding on the playpen. According to Consumer Reports, the padding should be no more than 1 inch thick. It should be firm -- not soft or squishy. It should fit snugly in the playpen so it does not move. Avoid playpens in which the mattress attaches to the bottom only with fabric fasteners -- which your baby might be able to reach.

Check the packaging of the playpen for a Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association seal of approval. The JPMA certifies brands to ensure they meet safety guidelines. It checks for design flaws that may pose safety risks.

    • 5

Avoid buying a used playpen. According to Consumer Reports, older playpens have top-rail hinges that can collapse. If you are considering a used playpen, check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to make sure it has not been recalled.

Check the weight of the playpen. If you will be taking the playpen with you often, it is best to find a unit that is lightweight.
