How to Choose Between Enfamil & Similac

Although breastfeeding is widely considered the best feeding option for babies, not all infants are able to feed exclusively on breast milk, requiring parents to choose a formula. The two leading brands, Similac and Enfamil, may seem very similar. Both must conform to strict government nutritional standards, but there are some fine differences between them. Choosing which brand is best for your baby may require a bit of thought and some trial and error.

Weigh the pros and cons or differences of each formula. Compare the claims.

Although Similac and Enfamil are similar in many ways and fulfill the FDA̵7;s baby formula nutritional requirements, there are some notable differences. DHA (docosahexaenoic) and ARA (arachidonic acid) are omega-3 fatty acids, which are important in brain and eyesight development in babies and children. According to BBC News, Enfamil has higher levels of DHA and AHA than Similac, about 17mg compared with about 11mg. Another difference is in the sifting of Enfamil powder formula, which is easier and more precise than Similac̵7;s powder. Enfamil is also cheaper than Similac.

Enfamil formula is made with palm olein oil, which one study indicates may cause less frequent, firmer bowel movements. Similac claims that its brand allows for 50 percent more absorption of calcium than Enfamil; that its newer formula has fewer bubbles; and that its Similac Isomil Advance formula will reduce gassiness, fussiness and spitting up after three days.

According to BBC News, many parents complain that their brand of infant formula causes side effects such as gassiness, spit-up, constipation and colic in their baby; switching brands may or may not help.
