How to Use a Medela Pump
Breast pumps apply manual suction (simulating a nursing infant) to a mother's nipple, allowing the collection of breast milk for later use. At first glance the Medela breast pump may seem intimidating, with all the parts and accessories, accompanied by a novel-sized instruction manual. In actuality, the Medela breast pump provides a comfortable and efficient way to nourish your baby when mom can't physically be there.
Things You'll Need
- Tubing
- Breastshield
- Connector piece (breastshield to Medela bottles)
Instructions
Attach the tubing to the pump. Screw the connector to the accompanying Medela bottle. Make sure that the flexible membrane (penny-sized) is already attatched and lying flat on the connector. Attach the tubing to the connector that is now secured to the bottle. Attach the breastshield (a horn-shaped piece that comes into contact with the breast) to the opposite side of the connector. Bring the horn to your breast, centering it over the nipple. (sizes vary from 18-24 mm) Keeping the horn at the breast, turn the machine on, using its lowest suction setting. Slowly increase suction to your personal comfort level. Previous:How to Wash Bottles
