The Recommended Feeding Schedule for Babies Eating Rice Cereal

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises that solid food introduction should take place between 4 and 6 months of age. Rice cereal is often one of baby's first foods. A single-grain cereal such as rice is easily digested, can be mixed with a liquid the baby is accustomed to (breast milk or formula) and is not likely to trigger an allergic reaction.

  1. Solid Food Readiness

    • According to HealthyChildren.org, most 6-month-old infants are ready for solid food. Prior to 4 months, babies have a tongue-thrust reflex, causing them to automatically reject offered food. This disappears between 4 and 6 months, however, and is one of the clues you can use to determine if your little one is ready. An active interest in your food, attempts to grab at your food and sitting up with support are other things to look out for.

    Timing

    • The AAP recommends exclusive breastfeeding for at least four to six months, while the World Health Organization states that 6 months is the ideal time for the introduction of solids. These guidelines are suggestions, however, because before 12 months of age, an infant should get most of his nutrition from breast milk or formula. Solid food before 12 months is for learning and practice, so parents shouldn't worry if their little one doesn't eat a large quantity.

    Preparation

    • Rice cereal is easy to prepare. First feedings of solid food should be the consistency of slightly thickened liquid. Use pumped breast milk or prepared formula mixed with just a little (about 1 tbsp.) of the dry cereal. You can warm the cereal very briefly in the microwave, but keep in mind it may reduce the antibody content of the breast milk and can cause hot spots to appear in the mixture, so be sure to stir well.

    Potential Problems

    • Introducing solid food too early (prior to 4 months of age) can lead to problems, such as potential for later obesity, as researched by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Another consideration is that rice cereal is generally enriched with iron, which can be constipating. Other suggested first foods are mashed banana, avocado or other soft fruits and vegetables; these pack more nutrition than rice cereal and don't have a constipating effect.

    • Eggs are a great first food for babies. They are an excellent source of protein, easy for babies to chew, and simple for parents to prepare. Many parents worry about introducing eggs to their infants as eggs are one of the top food allergens among
    • If youre a new mom or dad, the one thing that melts you most is watching your baby experience new things and giggle with joy. So when it comes time to cut back the milk or formula and start introducing baby food, most parents cant wait to get started
    • Among all of your new duties as a parent, you now have to figure out how frequently to feed your baby to ensure that she’s healthy, satisfied and growing. Luckily, that little bundle of joy will give you some signs to indicate that it’s t
