How to Make Zwieback Toast for Babies
When your little one is teething, she will love chewing on everything in sight in order to help her cut those teeth. For older babies who can already eat finger foods, Zwieback toast can be a good alternative to a plastic teething ring, giving her just enough pressure to alleviate some of the pain, while providing her with some practice with solid food. The toast has a nice sweet taste, which she will also surely enjoy.

- 1 cup milk
- 4 tbsp. butter, cut into pieces
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2/3 cup white sugar
- 1/4 ounce active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 egg
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Gather and organize the ingredients necessary for the preparation of the dough. In a small saucepan, heat 1 cup milk until it just begins to bubble. Remove saucepan from the heat; stir in 4 tbsp. butter, 1/4 cup honey and 1/2 tsp. salt. Measure out 2 tsp. sugar, stir into the milk mixture and allow it to cool to room temperature. Combine the yeast and 1/4 cup lukewarm water in a large mixing bowl. Set this aside for 5 minutes, allowing the yeast to soften. Beat cooled milk mixture, 1 egg, 4 cups flour, and 1/2 tsp. nutmeg into the yeast mixture, creating a doughy consistency. Knead dough in a bowl until a smooth, soft dough forms. Divide the dough into 8 balls, at least 3 inches in diameter. Place the balls on a baking sheet about 4 inches apart; press gently into 4 inch rounds. Lightly brush the top with water and sprinkle with remaining sugar. Set the rounds aside for at least for 1 hour, or until they have doubled in size. Place the baking sheet into the oven and bake the rounds for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. Allow to cool for 10 to 15 minutes, or at least until cool enough to handle. Use a bread knife to cut each round into six 1/2-inch slices. Place slices, cut sides down, back on the baking sheet and return to the oven. After 5 to 7 minutes, turn the slices over so both sides are equally golden brown. Turn off the heat and leave in the unopened oven until cool, about 45 minutes. Carefully remove the toast from the oven, and allow it to cool to room temperature before giving any to your little one.
