How to Nurse a Newborn in Public

Newborns eat every hour or two, so it's highly likely that you'll need to nurse your little one in public on a fairly regular basis. You have every legal right to breastfeed your newborn no matter where you are, but that doesn't mean that you're comfortable doing so. Some people are uncomfortable seeing others breastfeed, and this might make you a bit hesitant to nurse in public, too. Planning ahead will help you feed your baby as discreetly as you desire while you're out and about, and it will help you feel more comfortable about the entire process, too.

Things You'll Need

  • Nursing bra
  • Nursing top
  • Lightweight jacket or wrap sweater
  • Nursing wrap
  • Blanket

Instructions

    • 1

Wear a nursing bra when you go out in public, because they make it easier to bare your breast without having to get completely undressed.

    • 2

Wear clothes conducive to nursing. Many stores stock nursing tops that make it easy to breastfeed without getting undressed. A top that buttons up the front is another option. In cooler weather, wear a jacket or sweater that can be opened in the front. This way, you can snuggle your baby to your breast and then wrap the garment around your chest to cover yourself.

    • 3

Pack a nursing wrap in your diaper bag. These are specifically designed to loop around your neck and fasten in the front so you can place your baby to your breast underneath the wrap. A blanket can serve the same purpose.

    • 4

Scope out comfortable places to breastfeed when you arrive at your location. Perhaps a fitting room at a department store or a comfortable chair at the mall would work for you. Many stores that cater to mothers and their children have rooms specifically for nursing moms. Take advantage of these, too.

Nursing your baby in your car is an option if you're uncomfortable nursing in a public place. The car is close at hand and gives you a measure of privacy to feed your newborn while you're out and about.
