How to Treat a Baby With a Cold
Most babies catch their first cold before they turn one. The main cause before the age of one is the baby's under-developed immune system, and being around young kids who do not wash their hands. The cold is an infection caused by a virus in the baby's nose and throat. The most telling signs that your baby has cold is a runny nose and congestion. While there is no real cure for a baby's cold, there are many ways to treat the baby to help give them relief and comfort.
Things You'll Need
- Humidifier
- Bath tub
- Water
- Saline drops
- acetaminophen
Instructions
Place a humidifier in the baby's room. This will put extra moisture into the air and help alleviate the congestion. Give the baby a warm bath. This will also help to loosen up congestion. Administer nasal saline drops to help soften the mucus in the nose, making it easier for the baby to breath. Give the baby 1/2 to 2 oz. of water between feedings, depending on the baby's age. The water will help keep the baby hydrated. This should only be done if the baby is bottle fed. Give the baby the pediatrician recommended dose of acetaminophen if the baby has a low temperature.
