How to Treat a Baby With a Cold

Most babies catch their first cold before they turn one. The main cause before the age of one is the baby's under-developed immune system, and being around young kids who do not wash their hands. The cold is an infection caused by a virus in the baby's nose and throat. The most telling signs that your baby has cold is a runny nose and congestion. While there is no real cure for a baby's cold, there are many ways to treat the baby to help give them relief and comfort.

Things You'll Need

  • Humidifier
  • Bath tub
  • Water
  • Saline drops
  • acetaminophen

Instructions

    • 1

Place a humidifier in the baby's room. This will put extra moisture into the air and help alleviate the congestion.

    • 2

Give the baby a warm bath. This will also help to loosen up congestion.

    • 3

Administer nasal saline drops to help soften the mucus in the nose, making it easier for the baby to breath.

    • 4

Give the baby 1/2 to 2 oz. of water between feedings, depending on the baby's age. The water will help keep the baby hydrated. This should only be done if the baby is bottle fed.

    • 5

Give the baby the pediatrician recommended dose of acetaminophen if the baby has a low temperature.
