Calming an Infant After Circumcision

Circumcision is a major event for a newborn baby boy and his parents. After the procedure and when you have your baby back in your arms, you might have to work to calm him. Most infants recover quickly, needing only standard support to help with the pain.

  1. Cuddling

    • Hold your baby close when you receive him back after the circumcision. It̵7;s likely he̵7;ll be crying and agitated after the procedure. Sit calmly with your baby and try to breastfeed him, advises the University of Washington Medical Center. Breastfeeding is especially soothing for a newborn.

    Distraction

    • Use distraction to shift your baby̵7;s attention away from distress and pain, advises the University of Michigan Health System. Bouncing or rocking while holding him, singing, playing music, talking to him and providing a pacifier for sucking are all possible ways to distract a baby from pain.

    Pain Management

    • You have various options for pain management. Sugar water can be effective for relieving infant pain. Dip your clean finger or your child̵7;s pacifier in a sugar solution. A water and sugar mixture -- 24 percent solution, according to an article published in ̶0;Critical Care Nurse̶1; -- might relieve the baby̵7;s pain for as long as 10 minutes. Consult your physician about giving your baby acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve circumcision pain. The correct dosage depends on your baby̵7;s weight and the physician can provide you with the dosage appropriate for your baby̵7;s weight.

    Kangaroo Care

    • Holding your baby using skin-to-skin contact -- also called kangaroo care -- can relieve his pain and distress. Sit in a quiet room where you can hold your baby directly to your chest while rocking him. Cover the baby with a warm blanket to keep him secure and comfortable while you hold him. Skin-to-skin contact can be effective for helping to manage infant pain, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

    Normal Recovery

    • A newborn might sleep for a long time after circumcision. After waking, you might find your baby acts slightly withdrawn for up to 24 hours, advises pediatrician Alan Green, with the Dr. Greene website. Your baby should return to normal behavioral patterns after that time.

    • Babies have extremely limited physical abilities, being unable to speak and largely immobile without assistance. Because of these limitations, babies use crying as a predominant form of communication. When your baby cries, you may vacillate as to the
