Valentine Crafts for Babies

Babies need help to learn about Valentine's Day, art and the materials used to make special Valentine crafts. A good craft project for babies involves safe materials and stimulation of the senses. Babies need to explore and be creative through touching, tasting, seeing, listening and smelling. Crafts that stimulate one or more of these senses help babies become creative. Adults must remember that baby crafts can be messy, yet rewarding and fun for both the baby and the adult if attention is given to stimulating the senses.

  1. Be Safe and Messy

    • A baby should never use sharp tools, small choking hazards or harmful materials like toxic paints or glue when making a craft. Make safe paint by combining food coloring with light corn syrup. Create homemade glue by combining heated milk and vinegar, baking soda and warm water. Other materials like felt or paper should be cut up and prepared for use. Line the floor or table with paper, a plastic sheet or cardboard. Keep cleansing materials handy.

    Craft: Be My Valentine Handprints

    • Using scissors, cut out a big white or pink heart from construction or crepe paper. Make paint by adding a few drops of red food coloring with light corn syrup. Put the baby's hand in the paint and place it on the heart. Write a little message like "I Love You!" on the heart next to the hand print. Let the Valentine dry.

    Craft: Valentine Footprints

    • Using safe paint, put the baby's feet into the paint and then on to a piece of colored construction paper so that the feet resemble a heart. Let the paper dry. Cut a heart around the feet on the construction paper and glue the heart onto a different colored piece of construction paper. Cut a larger heart shape. Fold the heart in half to create a Valentine's Day card.

    Craft: Crepe Paper Valentine

    • Shred red, pink and white crepe paper into little pieces. Spread safe glue over a piece of cardboard. With the baby, attach the shredded pieces of paper onto the cardboard. Allow it to dry. Attach photos of the baby over the crepe paper as though it were a photo frame or collage.
