List of Newborn Baby Supplies
Newborn babies require many supplies to keep them happy, healthy and safe. Parents must make many decisions before their baby is born such as which car seat to choose, whether to bottle or breastfeed and where to keep their baby at night. Preparing early for the new arrival will help alleviate stress and help new parents feel confident.

Diapers
-
Disposable and cloth diapers are options available to parents. Disposable diapers come in many styles and are convenient, but more expensive. The newer style of cloth diapers use "Velcro" fasteners instead of diaper pins and many use flush-able liners. They are environmentally friendly, however, you will have to launder them. You will also need plenty of baby wipes and a diaper bag to carry supplies.
Feeding Supplies
-
New moms must decide whether to breastfeed or bottle-feed. If you breastfeed, purchase a supply of nursing pads and possibly a breast pump and storage containers if you plan to go back to work or have anyone else feed your baby. A specially designed nursing pillow will help support your baby during feedings. If you decide to bottle-feed, choose a formula based on your baby's needs, smaller sized bottles, plenty of nipples and a bottle brush for cleaning. Burping cloths are useful to protect clothing. Keep several pacifiers on hand since babies like to suck even when they are not hungry.
Car Seat
-
An approved car seat is a must for bringing your baby home from the hospital. Most hospitals will not allow you to take your baby home without one. Rear-facing infant car seats are required until your baby is one year old and weighs at least 20 pounds.
Crib
-
Your baby will need a place to sleep. A crib is necessary, however, you may choose a bassinet or cradle while he is small. Sheets and waterproof mattress covers will help protect the mattress. A crib bumper will help shield him from the hard sides of the crib when he starts rolling around.
Clothing
-
A newborn doesn't need an extensive wardrobe and know that your baby will outgrow newborn sizes very quickly. "Onesies" that snap between the legs are convenient for diaper changing. You should also have a supply of lightweight sleepers, booties or socks, and seasonal clothing such as hats, a snowsuit, sweatshirt or lightweight t-shirts.
Blankets
-
Receiving blankets are lightweight and convenient for swaddling your baby. Many blankets are designed for this and come with instructions. Thicker blankets or baby quilts are necessary in winter climates for use in the crib and to cover your baby on an outing.
Medicine
-
Infants have special needs when they are not feeling well. A nasal aspirator is necessary to clear your baby's nasal passages. Pain relievers to have on hand include acetaminophen and ibuprofen infant drops and gas-relief medication. Keep a digital and rectal thermometer readily available, as well as diaper rash ointment.
Hygiene Items
-
A gentle baby soap and soft washcloths are necessary items for keeping your baby clean. Newborns are too little for the bathtub, so a soft mat that fits in your sink will make bath time easier. Baby lotion, blunt nail clippers and a gentle brush are other hygiene necessities.
Stimuli
-
Babies need stimulation to encourage mental development and keep them pacified. Although newborns cannot see well, they can differentiate between black and white. Choose toys or pictures in black and white and select a mobile to hang over the crib. Music can help soothe a baby, as well as sound machines or CDs that play sounds of rain, waves and even heartbeats.
Other Items
-
Items you may prefer to have for convenience include a baby monitor, playpen and baby swing. Baby bouncers for infants are nice for bouncing your baby to sleep. A stroller or baby sling is a must for taking your baby for walks or to the mall. Eventually, you will need a highchair for mealtimes when your baby is old enough to sit up with help.
