How to Buy Baby Shoes

Whether your baby is crawling or attempting to walk, buying her the right type of shoes depends on her age and development as well as the purpose of the shoes -- such as for cold-weather outings or a summer day at the park. Going barefoot or wearing socks at home whenever possible is best, as your baby's foot muscles and bones are still developing, according to podiatrist Jane Andersen. However, when it is necessary for your baby to wear shoes, flexibility, breathability and the right fit are essential factors to look for when you go shoe shopping.

Get a correct measurement of your baby's shoe size. Pediatrician and author Dr. William Sears recommends visiting a shoe store that specializes in shoes for young children, where a trained salesperson will be able to give you an accurate measurement. If one of your child's feet is larger than the other, the larger measurement should be used.

Select shoes with enough room in the toe for your baby's feet to move about. No matter what size shoe your baby wears, there should be about a 1/2 inch of space between your child's longest toe and the tip of the shoe. There should also be enough space at the opening of the shoe so your child can easily flex her foot.

Look for shoes with flexible soles. The younger your child is, the thinner and more flexible the sole should be in order to allow your child's feet to bend easily when they are just learning to walk. You should be able to bend the shoe in your hands without much effort. Shoes with grooved, but flexible rubber soles can keep your baby from slipping on slick floors.

Check for breathability in the shoe's construction. Dr. Sears recommends choosing a naturally breathable material for your baby's first shoe, such as leather or canvas, which will get air to your baby's feet. Avoid any shoe with a heel for early walkers as well.
