Play Games for a 17 Month Old Baby
At 17 months old, it is natural for a toddler to want to play, and it should be encouraged. It is important to remember that the more basic the game seems, the better it may be for your toddler. Even the simplest activities can teach your child about the world and how it works.

Sand and Water Table
-
A sand or water table is an age-appropriate way to teach children fine motor skills and eye-hand coordination as they fills cups, funnels and sieves with sand or water. They will also gain the beginnings of understanding volume conservation while pouring the sand or water from a small cup to larger cup and back to the smaller cup. If you do not want to purchase a commercial sand and water table, it is simple to create your own. Find a small plastic tub and place it on a tarp inside, or use a small plastic swimming pool to play outside. Provide cups of all shapes and sizes, spoons, funnels, sieves and sponges and let your child explore.
Blocks
-
Blocks offer a variety of lessons for your child, who will begin to learn to classify and sort by color, size and shape. Children can develop fine motor skills as they attempt to stack the blocks higher and higher, and they will gain an understanding of construction as they build towers and castles. Wooden blocks, soft blocks or even blocks that interlock are suitable for these activities.
Hide and Seek
-
Take two or three cups that you cannot see through and a ball or some other small object for this activity. In front of your child, place the object under a cup, and begin moving the cups around. Then ask your child to point to the cup where the ball is believed to be. This activity is a fun way to teach your child attention and tracking skills. Of course, you can also play the traditional game of hide and seek inside or outside. Playing with your child will foster parent-child bonding while developing cognitive skills.
Rolling a Ball
-
Let your child test out strength by rolling a ball together. This is an extremely basic game. Sit across from your child and roll a ball back and forth. While building arm muscles and hand-eye coordination, this activity will also give your child a foundational understanding of distance and the transfer of weigh needed to get the ball from point A to point B. Rolling a ball is also a beginning lesson in how to throw and catch a ball later on in life.
