How to Stop a Baby From Turning Over in the Crib
Watching your baby develop can be exciting and sometimes a bit frightening. Babies who learn to roll from their backs to their stomachs at an early age are at a higher risk of SIDS. You can prevent your baby from accidentally rolling over before she is ready and help reduce the chance of potential injury and death.
Things You'll Need
- Swaddle blanket
- 2 towels
Instructions
Tightly swaddle your baby with her arms down at her side. Babies typically sleep better when they are swaddled. Swaddling will also reduce the ability for the baby to roll from her back to stomach. Place your baby on his back to sleep. It is more difficult for babies to flip from their backs to their stomachs. Clear the bassinet or crib of blankets, toys and stuffed animals. This will decrease the risk of suffocation. Roll the two towels tightly and place them on either side of your baby. To reduce the chance of the towels unrolling and causing a suffocation hazard, tie them or place a piece of tape around them. This will keep your baby from accidentally rolling over. Monitor your baby while he sleeps. If you are unable to keep the baby in the same room with you, purchase a baby video monitor. Make sure the baby monitor is placed in an area that is easy for you to see at all times. Increase your baby's tummy time to strengthen her neck muscles. It is vital for babies to have the strength to independently hold their heads up before sleeping on their stomachs.
