How to Help Babies Walk
Developmental milestones are an important part of your baby's growth. Throughout the first months, your baby's large motor muscles are slowly becoming stronger, enabling him to move a little bit more. Every baby develops differently. Most babies take their first steps between the ninth and twelfth month but some may walk earlier, while others may not take a step until between 16 and 17 months old. Although a baby's development cannot be rushed, there are steps you can take to help your baby prepare to walk.
Things You'll Need
- Baby toys
Instructions
Provide your baby with tummy time each day to strengthen the back muscles and help lead to other movements that precede walking. Lay your baby on his tummy each day and place eye-catching, age-appropriate toys just out of his reach to motivate him to move and reach toward them. Hold your baby so his feet lightly touch your legs as you sit. Allow him to push off your legs with his feet to strengthen the leg muscles. During the first few months, this is a reflexive action but strengthens the large motor muscles, nonetheless. Help your baby with upper body balance by moving toys off to his side while he's sitting. Place your baby near soft furniture, such as the couch, when he begins to show an interest in standing or makes attempt to stand on his own. Over time, he will progress from standing to cruising along the furniture. Hold your baby's hands while standing in front of him and encourage him to move toward you. Smile, cheer and make it fun. Once your baby can stand on his own, move just out of his reach and encourage him to walk toward you.
