How to Clean Wax Out of a Toddler's Ear

A small amount of ear wax is necessary, because it protects the inside of the ear from bacteria and debris. When excessive amounts of wax are produced, causing it to accumulate at the ear's opening, it needs to be cleaned out. Cleaning out a toddler's ears is a delicate process and should be handled with care so the inner ear is not damaged.

Things You'll Need

  • Soft cloth
  • Warm water
  • Mineral oil
  • Cotton ball

Instructions

    • 1

Soak a cotton ball in mineral oil.

    • 2

Have your toddler bend his or her head to one side, and hold the cotton ball over the ear.

    • 3

Squeeze the cotton ball to let three drops of mineral oil fall into the ear. This will soften ear wax so it eventually makes its way to the outer ear.

    • 4

Dampen a soft cloth with warm water. Wrap the wet cloth around your index finger.

    • 5

Gently run the cloth along the inside of the outer ear.

    • 6

Do not attempt to clean out the wax from the inner ear. This can result in impacted ear wax, which causes buzzing in the ears or pain.
