Ideas for Wacky Clothes Day for Toddlers

There's not much that a toddler enjoys more than the chance to be silly. Most day care centers and preschools understand that being silly is pure entertainment, but they also know that letting toddlers act goofy promotes normal development. The chance to be silly helps little ones learn to interact with the world around them in socially acceptable ways. A wacky clothes day is a perfect way to encourage toddlers to get crazy in a safe and age-appropriate way.

  1. Pajamas and Other Nighttime Clothes

    • You'll probably be met with giggles and guffaws of hilarity if you suggest that your toddler wear his pajamas to school, but it's a good way to encourage silliness. Many day care centers and preschools hold regular pajama days for this very reason. Let your toddler choose which pair of pajamas he wants to wear and he'll have even more fun with the wackiness. Go a step further and encourage your child to wear his slippers and robe and take along a pillow or blanket as a prop. A word of caution, however, would be to pack his sneakers in his backpack so he can still play outside at recess without the risk of hurting his feet.

    Mixed-Up Outfits

    • Toddlers don't really care if they're wearing plaids with stripes or purple with yellow, but they will welcome a chance to mix up their outfits even more. Encourage your toddler to wear two different socks or two different shoes. She might also enjoy wearing her pants or shirt backwards and inside out. Your toddler might enjoy wearing a pair of her sibling's pants or one of his T-shirts, too. Roll one of your child's pant legs up and leave the other down or push up one sleeve and leave the other down as additional ways to encourage your toddler to get in on the wacky clothes day action.

    Layering

    • Don't limit your toddler to just one set of clothes. Layering items of clothing is a good way to instill a sense of wackiness. Your toddler might like to wear a skirt or dress over a pair of jeans. He might think it's silly to pull his socks up over the cuffs of his pants, too. If he's really adventurous, a pair of underwear outside a pair of pants is a wacky way to participate in the event.

    Additional Ideas

    • Add accessories to make your toddler's outfit even more wacky. Perhaps she would enjoy wearing a large pair of costume glasses, a wig or clown shoes. Crazy hats are another accessory that can add an increased amount of wackiness to your toddler's outfit. Even if it's not Halloween, costumes lend a sense of silliness, too. A superhero cape over a princess dress is pretty wacky as is a clown wig with an animal costume. Let your toddler loose with the dress-up clothes idea and see what she comes up with. Chances are, her creation will be the wackiest of all.
