Give children plenty of water. When children don’t get enough water, their stools can come out hard and compact. Water is needed to soften the stools and encourage bowel regularity, so offer toddlers plenty of water throughout the day. Give toddlers plenty of time to be physically active. According to the University of Virginia Health System “Exercise aids digestion by helping the normal movements the intestines make to push food forward as it is digested. People who do not move around much are often constipated.” Minimize the amount of foods that cause constipation. Constipation in toddlers can be a result of eating junk foods that are high in fat, and sugar. If your toddler has a problem with infrequent bowel functions, try limiting the amount of foods that might cause him to become constipated such as pastry, cookies, candy, cheese, chips and soft drinks. Give toddlers plenty of bowel regulating foods. Fresh fruits, veggies, and whole grain breads and cereals are full of fiber, and should be a regular part of your child’s diet. Food items like fresh carrots and apples are best served in juice form as they are difficult for toddlers to chew. Minimize your toddler’s stress levels. Try to reduce the amount of stress your toddler fells when changes occur in his surrounding environment such as a new baby, as elevated levels of stress in your child can interfere with normal bowel movements.
