How to Make Potty Training Fun for Your Toddler Boy

Potty training can be both an exciting and stressful time for you and your toddler. Once you think your son is ready to tackle this milestone, you can help him become more comfortable and enthusiastic by making potty training entertaining. It can take months to completely ditch the diapers, but there̵7;s no rule saying you can̵7;t have fun in the process.

Things You'll Need

  • Potty chair or seat
  • O-shaped cereal
  • Dish soap

Instructions

    • 1

Include your child in the potty chair or potty seat selection process. If you let him pick one out that displays his favorite superhero or cartoon character on it, hopefully he will be excited about using it.

    • 2

Squeeze a few drops of regular dish soap into the toilet bowl right before your child urinates into the toilet water. His urine will make bubbles in the toilet water, which is sure to elicit a smile and possibly a little giggle.

    • 3

Bust a move. Once your little guy has successfully used the toilet, do a happy dance for him. You may feel silly, but it is really encouraging to your toddler. You don̵7;t have to contain this celebration to the bathroom; do a happy dance from room to room. Get other members of the family to join in, too, if you can.

Dish out plenty of praise when he uses the potty or just gives it a good effort. This can help boost your son̵7;s self-esteem and confidence. He is more likely to keep trying to use the potty if you offer positive reinforcement.

Assemble a box of inexpensive prizes. These can be stickers, temporary tattoos, small toy cars, plastic rings, fake bugs or small action figures. Let him pick one item out after every successful potty run. Be sure to put the bin out of his reach after he has made his selection.

Drop a few pieces of O-shaped cereal into the toilet bowl. This gives your son something to aim at, like a pee target. This is great for working on his aim, but it̵7;s best to introduce this potty training technique after he has learned how to pee sitting down, unless you don̵7;t mind cleaning urine off the floor and walls.
