Cooking Crafts for Toddlers
Your toddler is years away from being able to cook meals on his own, but he is old enough to learn about food preparation. You can take small steps to introduce him to your kitchen environment and give him some cooking pointers with hands-on crafts. Cooking crafts will be a fun, yet educational, experience for him.

Chef's Hat
-
A chef's cooking attire is not complete without a toque. Have your toddler create her own kid-sized, paper chef hat. Size a large, white piece of paper around your toddler's head and cut off any excess paper. Provide your toddler with markers, crayons, stickers and other art supplies to decorate her hat. Once your toddler is done decorating, tape the construction paper ends together and place it upon her head to wear. She can wear her chef hat while playing with a pretend toy oven or assisting you in the kitchen.
Toast Art
-
An easy, breakfast activity will be entertaining to toddlers. Have him make his own toast art creation. Set up a few plastic cups with a little milk inside. Add two drops of a different food color to each milk cup. Pair a paintbrush with each milk cup. Have your toddler use the paintbrushes to paint on slices of bread. After he is finished his creation, stick the bread in a toaster for a minute or until done. Add butter or jam, and let him eat his edible artwork.
Edible Playdough
-
Toddlers can help make edible dough to create all sort of things. Have your toddler wash her hands, and remind her that she must always clean her hands before touching food. Measure one cup flour, two cups oatmeal and one cup water. Assist your toddler with pouring the ingredients into a large bowl. Help her mix the ingredients together to create a soft dough. She can create people, animals or dinosaurs from the dough. Your toddler can even eat some of her creations.
Smile Snacks
-
Toddlers will be able to make a smile with fruit slices and simple kitchen ingredients. Cut an apple into several slices. Spread the slices with cream cheese or peanut butter. Have your toddler put a few miniature marshmallows on top of the cream cheese or peanut butter. Your toddler can then top the marshmallows with another apple slice. The marshmallows will be the teeth and the apples will be the lips. The finished product will resemble a kid's smile.
