How to Take Your Toddler to a Park
If a day out in the sunshine with the grass under your feet and your toddler gleefully running, swinging and climbing sounds ideal, planning a park trip is in order. Although taking your tot to the park may seem easy enough, without the proper planning your fun-filled day may quickly take a downward turn. Instead of simply strapping your toddler into her car seat and heading for the local outdoor play space, take the time to organize your pint-sized park adventure before you head out the door.

Instructions
Choose a park that's in close proximity to your house. Pick a park visit that -- in the event that your child tires easily, has a major meltdown or simply wants to leave -- doesn't mean a lengthy drive home. Investigate the park's playground equipment ahead of time. Make sure that it is age-appropriate for a toddler with -- according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission -- climbing equipment that is less than 32-inches high, spiral slides that feature under 360 degree turns, swings that have bucket-type seats, and single-file step ladders. Inspect the playground equipment closely to ensure that it is in acceptable condition -- look for rusty spots, screws that are visibly sticking out, broken swing chains or other safety concerns. Pick a park that has even, grassy areas and a shock-absorbing playground surface such as non-treated wood mulch, wood chips or recycled rubber mulch. Pack a bag to take with you. Include snacks, water or juice, sunscreen, tissues, diapers if your tot still needs them, and a change of clothes. It's a good idea to bring wipes for clean-up, whether your child is still in diapers or not. Bring a travel potty, if your toddler is toilet training. Keep the potty in your car just in case your child has to go and there are no available restrooms. Slather on the sunscreen. Cover all of your toddler's exposed skin with a fragrance free, gentle SPF broad-spectrum product at least 15 minutes before you head out into the sun. Tote the sunscreen along with you, reapplying it at least every 2 hours. Bring a stroller. Take along your toddler's stroller-- if he still uses one -- to take a long walk or give him a rest from running, and to hold your tote bag of gear. Give your toddler your rules for the park prior to leaving, and remind her of them as her day plays out. Make the rules simple, using as few words as possible, such as "No climbing up the slides" or "Share toys with the other kids."
