How to Fake a Fever

Faking a fever requires balancing a fine line between generating a fever that will get your parents to let you stay home from school and one that will land you in the doctor's office. Follow these steps to fake a fever and land yourself a free day in bed.

Things You'll Need

  • Mercury thermometer or digital thermometer

Instructions

    • 1

Complain of symptoms the night before you plan on faking your fever. Rub your throat, and tell your parents that it hurts, or consider telling them that you have a headache.

    • 2

Inform your mom or dad that you are going to take your temperature, but that you need them to read it for you. This will make you appear honest, and they will believe you when they see the thermometer for themselves.

    • 3

Put the thermometer in your mouth while in your parents' presence, and set a timer for 3 minutes. About 1/3 of the way through the 3 minutes, venture off into another room.

    • 4

Hold the digital thermometer in one hand, and rub the thumb of your other hand rapidly over the tip of the thermometer until you reach the fake fever temperature you desire. If you are using a mercury thermometer, put the tip under hot running water until it reaches the desired temperature.

    • 5

Return to your parents' presence, and hand them the thermometer with the fever temperature recorded on it.

    • 6

Ensure that you're acting normally throughout the process, or your parents might suspect you're trying to trick them.
