Teens view an after-school job as a means to getting what they want without the need to ask mom and dad to buy it for them. The first time that a teen has to say no to an after-school activity with friends because of the job is the day she will finally understand what it means to be responsible and dependable.

The after-school job helps teens learn how to budget their time so that homework and social activities are managed along with the job. Teens can learn the importance of scheduling and managing time so that no aspect of their life suffers. It is a challenge, but the lessons that are learned will serve well for the rest of their lives.

    • Parents teach children about money management and the work that is required to obtain money, but that lesson may not be crystal clear until the teen is working for his own money. Parents can help teach money management by helping teens budget their money with some of the earnings going into savings for college.

    • Teens can get some pride and self-confidence from an after-school job. The first paycheck that the teen receives is a proud day for everyone. Teenagers can also learn about the pride of a job well done. When working in the real world, teens learn that hard work is the key to keeping the job.
