How to Tell When a Teen Is Using GHB

Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), banned in the United States since 1990, is illegally produced and sold in liquid, powder and pill form on the streets for the purpose of getting high, according to Kids Health. Also called liquid ecstasy, Home Boy or G, it is used by teenagers across the country. Because it is typically ingested as a liquid, controlling the dosage is difficult, making it potentially lethal. Combining GHB and alcohol increases the risk. Recognizing the signs of possible GHB use in your teenager can help you determine what steps to take next.

Watch his behavior. Reduced inhibition frequently occurs on GHB. Your teen may become more talkative, flirtatious or outgoing while on the drug. In addition, he may not filter what he says and may willingly discuss inappropriate topics with those around him. Behaviors such as an increased lack of modesty and reduced concern for personal safety may also appear when inhibitions disappear.

Check the timing. It takes 15 to 30 minutes for GHB to take effect. The high from the drug typically wears off in three to six hours. If these changes take place shortly after he leaves the restroom, comes home or comes out of his bedroom, he may have ingested it before joining the family.

Note physical symptoms. Your teen on GHB can become extremely sleepy; in fact, he may go into such a deep sleep, it is referred to as a coma-like sleep. In addition, he may become sick to his stomach and dizzy. Vision changes are also common while on the drug. A headache that correlates with the behavior changes can also indicate GHB use.

Check for respiratory, heart and lung issues. If your teenager is on GHB, he may experience breathing difficulty, a slowed heart rate and a drop in blood pressure.

    • 5

Monitor for hallucinations. GHB, alone or combined with alcohol, can cause them to happen. Your teen may hear voices, see things that are not there, or imagine you are doing something you are not doing.
