How to Finish at the Basket in Basketball
The difference between winning and losing at basketball is often determined by which team is able to convert its layup opportunities. In other words, what team "finishes" at the basket most consistently. In this article I will offer some tips for finishing more effectively.
Things You'll Need
- Basketball

Get low. By getting low when you are driving or positioning around the basket you will be able to maximize your explosiveness in going up towards the basket. Watch some old video of Charles Barkley-at only about 6'5, he was able to finish against anybody in the league because he stayed low and then exploded to the basket. Keep your body between the ball and defender. When approaching the basket, the ball should not be exposed to the defender; you should always have a body part shielding the ball from the defender. Beat the defender to your "launching pad." Pick out the spot where you are going to explode up to the basket and make sure you beat the defender to that spot. Once you have reached your "launching pad," explode and extend up towards the basket. By going towards the basket you are creating the best opportunity to score, as well as getting a foul called on the opponent. High and soft off the backboard. Unless you can dunk it, the highest percentage shot around the basket is off the backboard. When coming to the basket at high speed, a high and soft shot off the backboard has a high likelihood of going in-if you try to score without the backboard your percentage will be cut down considerably. The shot high off the backboard will also minimize the opportunity for the defender to block it. When practicing finishing at the basket, always do it at game speed. When you play in a game, your muscles and hand/eye coordination will be dialed into how you practiced.
