How to Be a Low Post Scoring Guard in Basketball
Who says that low post scoring is only for the forwards and centers? Guards can add a new dimension to a team if they can become effective players in the post. Based on match-ups, a guard may have a significant height or strength advantage versus his/her opponent. Take advantage of this by getting into the post and getting some easy scoring opportunities. In this article I will focus on how guards can expand their game into the post.
Things You'll Need
- Basketball team
- Shooting and passing skills
- Offensive system that allows guards to get into the post
Instructions
Understand proper post positioning. Your feet should be just outside the lane and to the free throw line side of the block. You should be in a strong position with your feet just beyond shoulder width with your knees bent. This strong position will help you maintain your space when the defender is pushing on you. Develop three post moves: Stay within the team concept. Be sure that your posting up does not upset the flow of the team's offense. The most effective guard post-up is when it is unexpected--instead of just cutting through the lane and continuing back out to a wing, get to the block and post up. Be a big target and call for the ball. Make it easy for teammates to spot you and get you the ball. The forwards and centers will appreciate your persistence in getting open and will reward you for it--they have been in your position many times. As a guard, use your advanced passing skills in the post to create scoring opportunities for your teammates. When a ball is passed into the post, the defense has a tendency to collapse into the lane. Use your court vision to spot an open teammate.
