Humorous Ways to Announce the Gender of a Baby

According to a 2007 Gallup poll, two thirds of adults aged 18 to 34 and the majority of women under 50 want to know the baby's sex prior to birth. Friends and family members often anticipate this exciting news for months; "reveal" parties, in which family members gather for the big announcement, are becoming increasingly popular. Expecting couples armed with a sense of humor and creativity can announce the gender of their baby in an original and memorable way.

  1. Party Ideas

    • Host a festive party to announce your baby's gender. Invite close friends and family to your house for the big announcement. Decorate the house in pink and blue or neutral colors to avoid tipping your hand too early.

Encourage your guests to come to the party dressed in the color of their gender guess and divide them into "Team Blue" and "Team Pink" accordingly. Play a rousing game of Pictionary or Charades, at the end of which you and your spouse give clues as to the gender of the baby. Try tying bows into each other's hair to indicate a girl or pretending to throw a football back and forth if you are having a boy.

Make paper letter tiles spelling out "It's a Boy" or "It's a Girl" and place one letter inside each of several balloons. Blow up the balloons and let guests pop them, place the tiles together and unscramble the message.

Hide a pink or blue gumball in a cupcake; distribute one to each guest and have them bite into it at the count of three. You could also use pink or blue batter to make the cupcake and cover it with neutral frosting so that the color isn't revealed until guests eat the cupcake.

Serve Chinese food and order fortune cookies with the gender announcement inside them as the finale to the meal.

    • Buy or make t-shirts for the parents-to-be or any older siblings. The t-shirts can be simple and announce "I'm Getting a Baby Sister," "Baby Girl on Board" or "I Have to Share My Toys With a Boy!" Don your t-shirt and wear it to a family event or outing and see how long it takes family members to catch on to the exciting news. Send your child off to her grandparents' house wearing the t-shirt or snap a picture of your child and place it on your social networking site or distribute it through email.

Tie a pink or blue ribbon around the belly of the mother-to-be and see how long it takes friends or family members to ask about her sartorial addition. You could also use fingerpaint to decorate her belly with an image of the baby boy or girl within; take a picture and send it to friends and loved ones.
