Things a Mom Needs When Going Into Labor

As you approach the end of your pregnancy, it̵7;s time to think about packing for the hospital. While you may want to pack the blanket your aunt knit or the perfect coming home outfit for your baby, it̵7;s important to think of your own needs. You are going to the hospital to give birth. Packing the right supplies can comfort you as you bring new life into the world.

  1. Labor Clothing

    • Check with your hospital. Many hospitals will give you a gown to wear during labor. However, many hospitals allow you to wear more modest and comfortable clothing during the early part of labor. Consider packing a soft, oversized T-shirt or nightgown to wear in place of the hospital gown. It is also important to pack a robe whether you wear your own clothing or not. During the early stages of labor, many women find walking eases tension and pain. A bathrobe covers areas the hospital gown leaves open. Don̵7;t forget non-skid slippers or socks to keep your feet toasty warm.

    Labor Massage

    • Labor massage is effective during pregnancy and labor, according to a 2011 study done by the University of Miami School of medicine. Massage relaxes the mother and reduces her cortisol levels, which, in turn reduce unnecessary fetal movement. The study also found that women who received massage during labor experienced less pain and anxiety and reduced their labor duration on average, by three hours. Pack what you will need for massage, which includes massage oil and lotions. Consider packing tennis balls or other massage objects such as a back roller.

    Food

    • Depending on your doctor, you may not be able to eat during labor. If this is the case, pack some of your favorite, high nutrition snacks such as granola bars or trail mix. However, if you are at risk for a cesarean or your doctor forbids solid food, forgo snacks for yourself. Instead, pack lollipops or frozen juice treats to help keep your mouth moist during labor. In addition, you may want to pack your favorite thermal cup or mug to keep ice chips frozen.

    Comfort Objects

    • Labor is hard work. Many objects can help make you more comfortable. This may include music or an object to focus on during hard labor. Pack lip balm and lotion to keep your skin and mouth comfortable. If you have long hair, bring a rubber band or hair elastic to keep your hair out of the way. Keep phone numbers of family and friends handy in case you want to talk during early labor and to announce your happy news. Finally, keep a camera handy to record your thoughts and feelings as you prepare to bring this new life into the world.
