How to Sleep With a Newborn in the Bed
Bringing home a newborn is one of the most joyous times of your life, though getting rest with a newborn in the home can sometimes seem impossible. Most parents do not intend to allow their newborn to sleep in the bed with them, but at some point give in, hoping that the baby will sleep longer. When you allow the newborn to sleep in the bed with you, you are increasing the chance of sudden infant death syndrome, otherwise known as SIDS. Because of the dangers of sharing a bed with your newborn, there are some precautions you need to take and things you will need to do to decrease the risks.
Instructions
Feed the newborn and change her diaper, to ensure that the baby is satisfied and ready to rest. If a newborn has not been fed or had her diaper changed, she will not be content. Move anything that could harm the baby or cause him to suffocate. By doing this, you reduce the chances of the baby hurting himself and lower the chances for SIDS. Place the newborn where you are sure she will not get rolled over on or accidentally hit or kicked, resulting in injury. You also need to make sure the baby cannot roll or get pushed off the bed. Position the newborn on his back. According to the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford website, (updated in 2010), newborns that sleep on their backs are less likely to die of SIDS. Go to bed, being cautious of the fact that there is a newborn next to you.
