DIY Bassinet

Baby bassinets are ideal for newborns usually up to three months of age. Bassinets are less bulky then a crib and easy to place near the parent's bed. Having the baby close allows for an easier transition to parenting and eases the stress of late night awakenings and numerous feedings. Purchasing a bassinet can be a great expense. Most run from $80 to well over $200. Because they can only be used for the first few months, spending a significant amount of money on a bassinet can be a turn off. Parents should be aware that bassinets can be made at home thus saving the expense of purchasing one for their newborn.

Things You'll Need

  • Small Square Laundry Basket at least 22" in length
  • Soft Baby Blankets
  • Bassinet Fitted Sheet
  • Small piece of foam

Instructions

    • 1

Wash out the laundry basket with a mild soap. Dry with a clean towel.

    • 2

Cut the foam to fit the inside bottom of the laundry basket. It should fit snugly inside the laundry basket without any movement. Shifting of the foam could result in injury if the child's hand or foot got lodged in the basket.

    • 3

Wash all bedding to be used in the bassinet. Use a detergent safe for a newborn's sensitive skin.

    • 4

Place the fitted sheet over the foam piece. Make sure it fits securely over the foam. Pin any excess fabric underneath the foam to ensure the sheet stays in one place.

    • 5

Add a breathable receiving blanket to the bassinet to have handy for swaddling a newborn. Use newborn pajamas or blanket sleepers instead of bulky blankets to avoid suffocation.
