Natural Remedy for Infant Reflux

Sometimes helping a colicky baby is as easy as figuring out if your newborn suffers from acid reflux. A baby with reflux is cranky and uncomfortable. You may not have to seek medical intervention when dealing with infant reflux. There are many natural things you can try first.

  1. Feedings

    • If you have a baby that suffers reflux, there are several ways you can reduce the reflux while feeding. For example, give several small feedings throughout the day and night rather then larger feedings. Also, burp your baby in between a bottle feeding. Do not give the entire bottle and then burp. Stop during the feeding to burp the baby. This will help the baby get the gas out during the feeding.

Angle your baby so that the spine is straight while you are feeding him. Also, keep him upright for 25-30 minutes after you finish the bottle. You can also buy bottles that are specifically designed to help babies with reflux.

    Clothing

    • Be sure that your baby's clothes are not too tight. If you put your baby in clothes that are tight around the stomach, this will cause added pressure to the stomach and make the gas problems worse.

The same applies to diapers. Make sure the tabs are not too tight when diapering your baby. Again, the added pressure will cause your baby to develop more gas, resulting in reflux.

    Sleeping Position

    • It will really help if your baby sleeps in a more upright position rather than flat on her back. Roll a few receiving blankets and place them under the crib mattress at the top, thus angling the mattress.

You can also allow your newborn to sleep in the infant carrier or swing in order to stay at an upright position. There are also more expensive sleeping beds on the market such as the Amby Baby Motion bed. This bed claims to position your baby in such a way that will help babies with reflux.

    • Its common for newborn babies to have fine hair, often called lanugo. Lanugo is a soft, downy hair that covers a babys body, including their head, during the last trimester of pregnancy. Its a natural part of development and helps regulate body tempe
