How to Treat an Infant's Sore Throat
Dealing with an infant with a sore throat is difficult because the baby cannot verbally tell you what is plaguing him. Although a sore throat can be painful, it may not require a visit to the doctor's office because, according to the Ask Dr. Sears website, viruses are the cause of most sore throats. Unfortunately, you cannot treat a virus with antibiotics; therefore, it must run its course. However, there are ways to soothe an infant's sore throat to make the healing time more endurable.
Things You'll Need
- Acetaminophen or ibuprofen
- Cool mist humidifier or vaporizer
- Tea and honey
- Chilled apple juice
- Popsicle
Instructions
Administer the correct dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen to your infant based on his weight. It may take up to an hour for the medicine to start to soothe the baby. Run a cool mist humidifier or vaporizer in the infant's room. The mist will moisten the air, thus providing a soothing effect for your infant's sore throat. Feed your infant a warm bottle of tea to treat the soreness of his throat. Do not give your infant honey until he is over the age of 1. Feed your infant a cold treat such as a Popsicle or bottle of chilled apple juice to soothe her throat if she is able to eat solid foods.
