Can Parents Pass on Pink Eye to Infants?
As the parent of an infant, one of the concerns you have is how well he will be able to fight off illnesses since his immune system has not yet had a chance to develop completely. Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, simply means inflammation of the tissue around the eye. Some types of pink eye are contagious, while others aren't, but it's always best to use caution and take measures to prevent your infant from contracting it.

Basics
-
According to the Mayo Clinic website, pink eye is an inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that covers the eye, known as the conjunctiva. It contains small blood vessels, which are more visible when inflamed. This gives the eye its pink appearance when you have conjunctivitis. If you have other indicators such as redness, itchiness or a gritty feeling in your eye or eyes, you might have pinkeye.
Bacterial Conjunctivitis
-
There are three primary types of conjunctivitis. Allergy conjunctivitis, which is caused by allergies such as pollen, dust or animal dander, is not contagious. It can be seasonal or triggered during certain times of the year. It can also be triggered by exposure to strong scents. Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by transmitting bacteria and typically appears as a yellow or green discharge in the corners of the eye. In more severe cases, the eyelids can actually stick together and require a warm washcloth to separate. This type of pink eye is spread through direct contact, such as touching the infected eye. You must be on antibiotics for at least 24 hours to stop being contagious.
Viral Conjunctivitis
-
Viral conjunctivitis is caused by a virus and is spread by sneezing or coughing. Viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics, and you have to wait for the virus to clear up to stop being contagious. It is best to get checked by your doctor to determine what type of conjunctivitis you have. Viral conjunctivitis is typically noted by watery or itchy eyes and sensitivity to light.
Infant Concerns
-
Bacterial pinkeye is more common than viral pinkeye with children under age 2. Child development experts at the Kids Health website report that the risk of pink eye is higher for infants and stress that if you suspect your infant has contracted pink eye to contact her pediatrician immediately. Your baby can also be born with a blocked tear duct, which can lead to conjunctivitis if it doesn't clear up on its own.
