How to Clear Up a Nasal Passage

When you have a cold or sinus issue, there are plenty of over the counter medications which will help loosen your congestion and allow you to get through the day. But when your baby has stuffed sinuses, you can find yourself at a loss for what to do. Here are some tips on how to clear up a nasal passage for your baby.

Things You'll Need

  • Humidifier
  • Vapor rub for baby's
  • Baby saline solution
  • Eye dropper (if not included with saline soultion)

Instructions

    • 1

Place a humidifier next to your baby's crib. When we suffer from congestion, our nasal passage becomes very tight as it is filled with mucous. The steam from the humidifier will help loosen the mucous in the nasal passage. Just be sure that the steam is not blowing directly on the baby, but above or to the side of the baby. Also, close the door to the room so that moisture stays in the area and doesn't escape.

Rub a small dollop of baby vapor rub on the baby's chest. Be sure that you purchase the baby version of the chest rub as the adult rub will be too strong and will cause irritation on the baby's chest. As the baby breathes in the aromas being released, the mucous in the nasal passage will begin to loosen.

Put drops of saline solution in the baby's nose. Saline solution is simply salt and water. Use just a pinch in a cup of water if you are mixing it yourself at home. After you place the drops in the nose, sit the baby up and see if you can gently clean the nasal passage with a tissue. The baby won't be able to "blow" on their own, but their natural act of breathing should serve to loosen and force out some of the mucous.
